Williams Selyem Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2014

Sonoma Coast, CA

91 pts. Cellar Tracker

"Two thousand fourteen has turned out to be a fabulous vintage for Pinot Noir. Across the board, the quality of the 2014 Pinots is tremendous." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

This Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is a GORGEOUS representation of the region. It boasts all the beautiful characteristics that define Pinot Noirs from California's chilly, foggy Sonoma Coast. Williams Selyem knocks it out of the park with this masterfully crafted wine!

WINEMAKER COMMENTS:

Highlighted by dark cherry aromas with hints of bramble and underbrush, the 2014 Sonoma Coast offers a full gamut of fruit and savory notes. Crushed rocks and pencil shavings further add to the overall complexity. The texture in the mouth is compelling with a nice interplay of acidity and mouth-filling tannins. Flavors of black cherry and pomegranate are juxtaposed with hints of toasted walnut and bergamot. The palate is punctuated by cherry pit and a lovely floral lift, leaving a lasting impression in the mouth. Please make sure to hold onto a few bottles for the long haul. Optimal drinking window: 2017-2023.

THE VINEYARDS:

The Pinot Noir for this blend was sourced from the Hirsch Vineyard, the Coastlands Vineyard and our Drake Estate Vineyard.

HARVEST 2014:

After two stellar vintages, 2014 completes the trifecta of high quality growing seasons where the wines exhibit purity of place with generous fruit and elegant textures. The season began as one of the driest winters on record with only 40% of normal rainfall by mid-season. April rains replenished the soil’s moisture profile to re-invigorate the plants, boost growth, and help set a bountiful crop. The harvest season was near perfect with warm temperatures allowing for a leisurely picking schedule. 2014 is a superb vintage of compelling nature and will develop well with long range cellaring.

A bit richer than your typical Pinot Noir, this is a hearty wine that can stand alone.
