Domaine Drouhin "Laurene" Pinot Noir 2017
Willamette Valley, OR - Dundee Hills AVA
In Burgundy, France, the Drouhin family has been producing award-winning wines under the Maison Joseph Drouhin label since 1880. Descendants of Joseph, siblings Veronique and Philippe Drouhin started making wine in Oregon’s Willamette Valley in 1987 after discovering the many similarities the region shares with Burgundy, and thus the potential for producing exceptional Pinot Noirs there. These people really know what they're doing, as evidenced in this extraordinary Pinot!
95 pts. James Suckling:
"A selection of around 100 barrels from the Dundee Hills estate pinot, this has a deeply grounded and confidently defined feel on the palate with density of tannin and a strong, noble core that carries long and builds so convincingly. Long, sustained, seamless quality to the finish. Drink over the next decade."
95 pts. Vinous:
"Shimmering ruby-red. High-pitched red fruit, floral and exotic spice aromas are complemented by suave incense and vanilla flourishes. Sweet, seamless and penetrating on the palate, offering vibrant raspberry, boysenberry, cherry preserve and spicecake flavors that convey a deft blend of power and delicacy. Finishes extremely long and precise, with resonating floral character and well-judged, polished tannins that sneak in late." - Josh Raynolds
93 pts. Wine Advocate:
"The 2017 Pinot Noir Laurene is a selection of the best barrels from Domaine Drouhin fruit. Pale to medium ruby, it has an open-knit nose of crushed blackberries, spiced cranberry sauce, forest floor, allspice, citrus peel and tree bark. It’s medium bodied with intense, spicy fruits, a grainy frame and seamless freshness, finishing very long." - EB
93 pts. Wine Enthusiast:
"... Ripe scents and flavors highlight blueberry compote, dappled with fresh herbs, notably rosemary and thyme. It's an elegant, nicely detailed wine, with the structure to improve over the next decade or longer." - Paul Gregutt
FROM THE WINERY:
About the Laurène Cuvée
Named after Véronique Boss-Drouhin’s elder daughter, Laurène is our flagship wine and is produced entirely from Pinot Noir grown on the family’s estate in the Dundee Hills. The fruit is handpicked into small totes, destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and then placed into French Oak barrels. Once the vintage is safely in the cellar, Véronique begins the process of selecting barrels which have an extra complexity, length, and depth — barrels which will work together as Laurène.
A cool, wet spring slowed the arrival of bud break, but warming temperatures made for a very productive summer. By late August, moderate weather set in, allowing fruit maturation to slow. By the middle of September, temperatures were perfect. Over the course of nearly three weeks, we were able to harvest parcel by parcel, each at the optimal level of ripeness. In the end, 2017 gave us beautifully balanced fruit with delightful flavors and lovely length.
Véronique’s Tasting Notes
2017 marked our 30th Anniversary in Oregon, and the 2017 Laurène marks the 26th release of this cuvée named for my daughter. The wine has charm and character—vibrant, yet restrained, which allows the vintage’s detail to be expressed. On the nose, the 2017 Laurène carries notes of pure, sweet cherry, pomegranate, baking spice, ripe blackberries, wild herbs, and fresh sage. While intensely woven now, a few years of cellaring will reveal silk, elegance, and expressive depth of texture. I trust this wine will age for 8-10 years effortlessly.
