LaRue Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2018
LaRue's winemaker Katy Wilson had many years' experience making Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs as assistant winemaker at Flowers Winery. Her expertise really shines in this 2018 Pinot! "Complex" is my best adjective for this wine. There are floral notes on the nose, then a lively spiciness combined with deep dark fruit flavors and subtle forest floor on the palate. A nice long finish caps it off. Its wonderful acidity suggests a long life span, and as an added bonus the alcohol content is just 13.3%! What more can you ask of a Pinot Noir?
95 pts. Wine Enthusiast:
"This is a bringing together of three vineyard sites, 46% Thorn Ridge, 38% Rice-Spivak and 16% Emmaline Ann. Gorgeous and delicious, it sings in black tea, rhubarb, violet and orange peel, with bright, delicate structure and underlying acidity. A tease of dark chocolate lingers on the finish."
FROM THE WINERY
Our 2018 Sonoma Coast pinot noir is a special barrel selection from the Thorn Ridge Vineyard, Rice-Spivak Vineyard, and Emmaline Ann Vineyard. Each year, Katy Wilson crafts our Sonoma Coast blend to be a wine you can enjoy upon release or cellar for years.
The 2018 vintage was one of balance and finesse. The moderate weather brought higher than average yields across Sonoma and Napa counties and allowed the grapes to ripen in ideal conditions. This harvest was later than the past several vintages, but it was closer to historical averages and we were picking into early October. This long hang time and balanced crop load produced a great vintage with intense flavors and a refined tannin structure leading to cellar-worthy wines.
Opening up with aromas of raspberry, black cherry, and dried plum, this fruit forward wine is balanced by notes of crème de cassis, turned earth and baking spices. The palate is rich and mouth-filling with flavors of strawberry, cranberry preserves, and orange rind. Hints of violets, vanilla, and cocoa lead to a lasting and smooth finish.
