Resonance Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2022
94 pts. Wine Spectator:
"Fragrant raspberry and fresh violet aromas lead to elegantly layered cherry, mineral and savory tea flavors, with a silky mouthfeel that slowly builds tension on the polished finish. Drink now through 2033."
93 pts. James Suckling:
"Aromas rich in savory, woodsy and spicy notes lead to vibrant black cherries, grilled plums, mushrooms, star anise and a touch of black pepper. Distinctive for a broad Willamette Valley bottling, this is lively and medium-bodied. Drink now or hold."
Jacques Lardière, the winemaker for Burgundy's Maison Louis Jadot for 42 years, retired in 2012. He came to the Willamette Valley and found Resonance vineyard - "a potentially iconic vineyard capable of producing site-expressive wines with character." Jacques couldn't resist - he decided to come out of retirement and co-founded Resonance Wines in 2013.
The Resonance Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is a shining example of how great Oregon Pinots can be, with the right winemaker! Close your eyes, smell, and you'd think it's a Burgundy, with lots of minerality on the nose. But take a sip and you get more fruit and depth of flavor - Willamette Valley "flair." It's a very complex wine and completely enjoyable! - Wine Factor
FROM THE WINERY
Our Willamette Valley Pinot noir represents a blend of the finest vineyards in the Willamette Valley and includes grapes from our own estate vineyards, Résonance and Découverte. We work with like-minded wine growers throughout the area who share our commitment to cultivating terroir-driven Pinot noir. The result is a cuvée that offers an authentic representation of the Willamette Valley AVA.
TASTING NOTES
A beautiful bright ruby color for this expressive wine, with aromas of blueberry, raspberry, orange peel, rose, lavender, black pepper, and morel mushroom. The palate is generous, fresh, and fruity, and the tannins are well balanced by a pleasant acidity: a wine that is alive.
THE 2022 VINTAGE
The winter of 2021-2022 was relatively warm, with the month of February especially dry, and vines were waking up by the end of March. On April 13th, we had snow, followed by three nights with temperatures below 30°F/0°C, and frost damage, especially in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Koosah Vineyard, situated at high elevation in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA, was not impacted by the frost. The spring stayed cold and wet, until the very first days of the summer. These conditions were helpful for the vines allowing them to slowly recover from the frost and delaying the growing season. At the end of June, a heat wave started, and we saw vines rapidly grow. Bloom occurred at the beginning of July with ideal weather. The rest of the summer provided ample warmth, with dry conditions into September. October brought similar weather, with warm days and cool nights, bringing the Pinot noir to a perfect ripeness. With low yields, in link with the frost of April, the Pinot noir of Jolis Monts and Résonance Vineyard in Yamhill-Carlton was ready to be picked in the first two weeks of October. The clusters were small, with dark color and high concentration. We picked Découverte Vineyard in Dundee Hills AVA around October 15th, and finally, Koosah Vineyard Pinot noir in the Eola Amity Hills AVA, from October 19th to 21st, just before the rain started. In these two vineyards, the yields were higher, with a perfect balance between sugar concentration and acidity level. From the first days of maceration, the Pinot noir revealed expressive and fruity aromas, with amazing color and purity in the mouth. A challenging but promising vintage.
