Altesino Montosoli Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016

Tuscany, Italy
97 pts. James Suckling:

"Lovely sweet cherries and heather with some leather and balsamic undertones. It’s full-bodied with a velvety and lightly dusty palate. Juicy fruit and pretty orange peel to the berry character. Hints of cedar and meat at the end. Subtle and complex. Drink after 2025."

97 pts. Wine Enthusiast:

“Rose, forest berry, underbrush and new leather are some of the aromas you’ll find on this full-bodied red. From one of Montalcino’s greatest vineyard sites, the firmly structured, elegant palate is also delicious, boasting ripe black cherry, raspberry compote, tobacco and licorice set against taut, fine-grained tannins. It’s well balanced, with bright acidity. Drink 2024–2036.”

97 pts. Wine Spectator:

“Packed with sweet, ripe cherry, plum and raspberry fruit and framed by loamy earth and woodsy notes, this red is intense, lively and light on its feet. Balanced, with firm tannins and a salty, minerally impression on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2024 through 2045.”

FROM THE WINERY

Montosoli is in fact a vineyard of about 5 hectares to the north east of Montalcino at an altitude between 350 and 400 metres, whose grapes were fermented and aged separately for the first time after the 1975 harvest. The composition of the soil (marly limestone and siliceous limestone representing the Alberese era with lithoid components dating from the same period), the unique position and particular microclimate contribute to ageing the grapes which produce an extremely complex and elegant wine. Brunello Montosoli has a deep ruby red colour which turns a garnet red with age. Its bouquet has outstanding character with hints of black cherry, blackberries, raspberries, violet, liquorice, vanilla and a slight accent of pink peppercorn. On the palate it reveals a dry, warm, velvety flavour, rich in substance and noble pedigree, ending with a warm note that lingers persuasively. Altesino has received important international recognition for its Cru Montosoli when Wine Spectator called it Italy’s second most representative vineyard.
