On a recent wine-tasting trip to the San Luis Obispo area we were told by the owner of Stephen Ross winery that we really should try Cutruzzola while we were there. What a find! We were won over by their spectacular Pinot Noirs, especially the Gloria 2015! It’s so fun when we discover a TRULY BOUTIQUE winery like this, which produces amazing Pinots in small quantities – only 274 cases of this Pinot were produced. You definitely won’t find this delicious wine in a store!
FROM THE WINERY:
Our Pinot Noir vines were planted in 2001 and 2006 on steep south-facing hillsides in complex soil mixtures of clay, sand and limestone. Growing six miles from the ocean, these vines enjoy gentle morning warmth and sunshine, cooling afternoon breezes, and enough nighttime chilling to halt wine metabolism and preserve natural acidity. The fourth year of drought reduced yields to 1.4 tons per acre. More importantly, many shot berries and small seed-bearing berries resulted in a high skin to juice ratio, producing this deeply colored and highly structured 2015 Pinot Noir. Due to the low yields, this Gloria bottling received all of the grapes normally reserved for the Giacomino Reserve.
A deep nose with notes of spicebox, purple flowers, cherry and plum. The mid-palate reveals silky tannins and a bold texture before graduating to a complex and persistent finish. This wine is crafted to be dense and serious yet elegant.
