When we first tasted this wine with our “tasting panel” here at Wine Factor, we were surprised at the total, unanimous “yum!" that we got from everyone. It doesn’t occur very often, when everyone’s taste buds all line up accordingly. What a fine wine! Ryan and Jessica Carr have a facility in Santa Barbara where they actively cultivate and oversee the 29 acre Kessler-Haak vineyards (26 acres for Pinot Noir and 3 acres for Chardonnay) in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. The vineyard was planted in 2005 and is owned by Dan and Ellen Kessler. The combination of rolling hills and valley topography are a great combination for this vineyard. A deep rich color, the aromas are of lush dark berries, forest floor, hints of mushroom and plum, subtle hints of light cherries, rhubarb, blackberry jam and black current flavors. The fine tannins are well balanced and leads to a dense and velvety long finish.
The 2009 harvest only produced a minute 1.5 tons of fruit per acre at about eighteen tiny yet gorgeous clusters per vine. Clones were 114, 2A and Pommard. Ryan uses French oak for his barreling and aged this Pinot Noir for 12 months.
