Casanova Di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova DOCG 2013

Tuscany, Italy

98 pts. James Suckling: "A vivid and bright red with intense blueberries and raspberries. Floral undertones and tons of citrus, too! Full-bodied, dense and layered. Polished tannins and fantastic fruit. The muscularity of the structure is what gives this wine focus and intensity. So serious for the vintage. Give it time to show its greatness. Drink in 2022."

97 pts. Wine Advocate: "Casanova di Neri's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is celebrating its 20th anniversary (1993-2013), and a special gold-label edition of the wine was made to commemorate this important milestone. I tasted the white label for this review. This is a bold and expressive Brunello that displays tightly knit aromas of Morello cherry, spice, leather and balsam herb that are the building blocks of the most beautiful Brunellos that come to mind. The Casanova di Neri house style implies a modern and sophisticated approach for sure. But the inner spirit and texture of Sangiovese is so fine and polished in its natural state that it hardly matters. The personality of the grape shines through with a loud and confident voice." -Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

96 pts. Wine Spectator: "Sweet, ripe strawberry and cherry fruit melds seamlessly with the dense, refined structure of this red. Saline, licorice and spice accents add complexity as this lingers gracefully on the finish. Terrific harmony and expression. Best from 2021 through 2037."

*NOTE: Due to the challenging vintage, Casanova di Neri DID NOT MAKE a 2014 Tenuta Nuova Brunello! So stock up on the 2013!

Vintage Notes:

After a fairly mild winter start, from the end of November to the whole of January the temperatures were cold with cold and rainy days. The beginning of spring was late compared to the averages of previous years, from May the temperatures started to increase gradually alternating with light rains. From early June the summer began with average temperatures and sporadic rains occurred at the most opportune moments to bring water reserves to plants. The mid-August time thunderstorms have significantly lowered the temperatures, especially the nocturnal ones, becoming favorable to the aromatic expression and allowing the grapes to ripen perfectly.

HARVEST Manual from 24/09 to 07/10
WINE Manual selection of the grapes before and after the detachment. It follows spontaneous fermentation without the use of added yeasts and maceration assisted by frequent fulling. All this takes place in stainless steel, temperature-controlled vats for 24 days

NOTES OF GIOVANNI NERI: Already at first glance, the splendid bright red color of the Tenuta Nuova 2013 lets us presage the potential of this wine. The initial aroma releases an expressive bouquet of very young red fruit accompanied by the unmistakable balsamic. In the mouth it is substantial and rich, with a rare and silky tannic quality. A combination of delicacy, balance and intense aromas of blackberry, it releases the best of itself, opened a few hours before and served at the recommended temperature.
