Joseph Phelps Freestone Vineyards Pinot Noir 2019

Sonoma Coast, CA

96 pts. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:

"The 2019 takes time to open, metamorphosing from iron and woodsmoke to raspberries, dried flowers, dark spices and aniseed. The palate is silky and seamlessly fresh, loaded with perfectly ripe, earth-laced fruits whose flavors linger for a very long time in the mouth. This has the fruit intensity and structure to age very well in bottle." -EB (June 2021)

95 pts. James Suckling:

"Blueberry and spice with lightly toasted notes and some nuts. Full, yet very tight, with refined tannins and polish. Linear and long. Intense and vivid. A beauty." (May 2021)

94 pts. Wine Enthusiast:

"Savory forest floor tones contrast well against crisp, focused flavors of blood orange, pomegranate and cherry. With length and breadth, it is structured yet expansive, with and immensely delicious palate." –VB

As you would expect from a class-act winery such as Joseph Phelps, this Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir holds an elite status as one of the highest in quality. Everything about this wine screams "MONEY", and yet it's extremely moderately priced! And such a beauty of a Pinot!

Blend and Grape Sources: 100% Pinot Noir from our Pastorale and Quarter Moon estate vineyards and select nearby growers.
Appellation: Sonoma Coast
Aging/Cooperage: 13 months in 36% new and 64% two-year-old French oak barrels.

Winemaking Data

Grapes are harvested at night followed by sorting before the fruit is gravity fed to tank for a long natural fermentation using an overall average of 15% whole clusters in the final blend. Regular punch downs result in a structured wine with silky texture and a distinctive spice character of sweet red berries, forest floor and clove prevalent in this area of the western Sonoma Coast.

Winemaker Notes

The 2019 Pinot Noir opens with intensely floral aromatics of red fruit, dried savory herbs and violets. A viscous, layered wine with balanced acid and tannin structure, jammy boysenberry, baking spice, and sour cherry notes linger to a complex finish.

Vintage Notes

In 2019, bud break occurred around the same time as 2018 but was delayed compared to our historical averages due to cold, saturated soils from the wet winter, particularly in February. Cool weather continued throughout spring with an unusual amount of rainfall which delayed bloom in some areas. Canopy management was key in 2019 due to vigorous growth and moderate temperatures. July was cooler than average, but August and September warmed to push ripening ahead. The first blocks of Pinot Noir were picked on September 10th and the team completed picking in early October. In 2019, the quality of Pinot Noir from our Sonoma Coast estate was excellent with well-developed flavors, naturally fresh acidity and superb balance.
