Handley Cellars Yorkville Highlands Pinot Noir 2014

Yorkville Highlands, Mendocino County, CA

"2014 has turned out to be a fabulous vintage for Pinot Noir. Across the board, the quality of the 2014 Pinots is tremendous." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

See our video and blog about our visit to Handley Cellars!

Handley Cellars is one of the top Pinot Noir producers in the Anderson Valley of Northern California. We are big fans of this winery! The Yorkville Highlands Pinot Noir is a fairly full-bodied wine compared to most Pinots from this region. The vineyards are in the warmer end of the Anderson Valley, so the grapes get riper than on the cooler coastal end. But by no means is it a fruit bomb! This Pinot Noir is so perfectly balanced, with wonderful fruit, earth, and mineral characteristics; it's a delight to the taste buds!

Winemaker's Notes:

One of California’s coolest grape growing regions, the climate of Anderson Valley is ideal for Pinot Noir. At Handley Cellars we farm responsibly, using organic methods and avoiding chemicals whenever possible. We work to encourage healthy, living soils, which in turn support the grapevines and yield flavorful fruit that shows varietal character and regional attributes. Handley Cellars completed the CCOF Organic certification process for grape growing in 2005, because we believe that this helps minimize our impact on the environment and creates a healthy workplace for our employees.

The fruit for this wine originates from the Walsh Vineyard located in the Yorkville Highlands, a region further inland and warmer than the Handley Estate. It was the first Pinot Noir we harvested in 2014. Aromas of strawberries, roses, with hints of anise, are followed by complex flavors of red cherries, strawberries, and a suggestion of nutmeg. The wine is full bodied with velvety tannins and a slightly spicy finish. Aging for 18 months in all French oak barrels (25% new) gives this Pinot a softer finish. Our 2014 Yorkville Highlands Pinot was sterile filtered prior to bottling.
