Summerland Winery, Fiddlestix Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

Sta. Rita Hills, CA

This is a beautiful Pinot Noir from the famous Fiddlestix vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills. A gem of a boutique wine, with an incredibly loooong, delicious finish. It's elegant yet very flavorful, and is enjoyable with or without food. We had it with a tomato and mushroom pasta, and it paired very nicely! It has enough acidity to stand up to tomato based foods, and would also be a great cheese and nuts appetizer wine.

"2014 has turned out to be a fabulous vintage for Pinot Noir. Across the board, the quality of the 2014 Pinots is tremendous." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Located in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation, Fiddlestix Vineyard encompasses some of the finest cool climate Pinot Noir grown on the Central Coast. With fruit recognized for unparalleled depth and intensity, we carefully apply minimal punchdowns by hand during fermentation to extract the precise amount of color and flavor needed to produce a wine that is ultimately full, yet balanced. We work closely with vineyard owner Kathy Joseph to obtain optimum ripeness and flavors at harvest. Summerland Winery sources the Pommard cultivar along with the Dijon clones 667, 777, 113 from Fiddlestix Vineyard.

The grapes were allowed to cold soak for a period of 6-7 days to extract color and flavor. The wine underwent fermentation in 1.5 ton open top fermenters and with manual punch-downs. Each Pinot Noir lot was inoculated with Assmanhausen yeast for its slow fermentation properties and organoleptic influence. The maceration period averaged 20-25 days for optimum tannin and color extraction. Aging took place in 100% François Frères cooperage from a variety of forests for 11 months in 1/2 new oak. As always, we pushed the envelope during harvest in order to achieve full ripeness and mature phenolic development.

Even with an early harvest and mild winter, this Pinot Noir has an intense and profound ruby color. A gorgeous nose of baking spices and plums, graced by a touch of dried flowers and incense. Its ample acids lend firmness and length. Great homogeneous structure on a base of beautiful oak, the 2014 Fiddlestix has a finish which is persistent, complex with graceful tannins.
