96 pts. Kerin O'Keefe:
"The beguiling 2020 Rio Sordo is one of the best wines I've ever tried from Musso and is an excellent expression of this famed vineyard site and what has turned out to be a great vintage for the estate. It opens with heady scents recalling pressed rose, new leather, forest floor and pipe tobacco while the full-bodied, structured palate delivers ripe red cherry, wild strawberry, licorice and crushed mint. Firm, refined tannins and fresh acidity keep it balanced and lend an age-worthy structure. Drink 2030 - 2040."
96 pts. Wines Critic (Raffaele Vecchione):
"Fun and open in its sensory profile, it shows notes of cherries, elderberry, guarana, agapanthus, lemongrass, vetiver and verbena. Full body, polymerized tannins with a splendid silky shape and a finish that excites and tells what the purebreds made in Barbaresco are made of. Rio Sordo is a certainty. Great now, will be even better with a couple years behind it."
The Musso Rio Sordo is absolutely delicious, year after year! If you've never had a Musso Barbaresco, or any Barbaresco for that matter, you MUST try this one! You'll fall in love with Barbarescos like we did! - Wine Factor
FROM THE WINERY
Rio Sordo Vineyard
Altitude: 250-300 m.a.s.l.
With a south-west exposure at an altitude between 250 and 300 meters above sea level, the Rio Sordo cru is made up of compact soil, with a prevalence of limestone and a good presence of clay and veins of sand. The result is a soil that contributes strongly to the characterization of the wine, which has a robust structure and with a virtuous ability to withstand the pitfalls of time.
Winemaking
After pressing with elimination of the stalks, the must ferments in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 24-26°C. During the fermentation with emerged cap, periodic pumpovers are made. Then there is submerged cap maceration for about one month. Thus the new wine begins its maturation process, spending the first 12 months in 50 hl Solvanian oak barrels and other 12 months in 25 hl wooden barrels.
Tasting Notes
The color is a garnet of beautiful depth and tone. The scent is broad and intense. The flavor is dry, full, warm and persistent. Barbaresco “Rio Sordo” shares the company of meat dishes. Without neglecting the first courses of stuffed pasta with meat sauce and long-matured cheeses. With the passage of time and with the better refinement, Barbaresco Rio Sordo becomes a splendid meditation wine.
