Long Shadows Feather Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Columbia Valley, WA
750 ml
97 pts. Jeb Dunnuck:

“The 2021 Feather is inky purple-hued and offers a brilliant nose of cassis, new leather, graphite, and truffly earth. This rich, spicy, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon has terrific purity, a deep, layered mid-palate, and a broad, layered, expansive mouthfeel that keeps you coming back to the glass.”

94+ pts. Vinous:

“This envelops the palate in creamy textural waves and ripe red and blue fruits energized by a core of zesty acidity. Dramatically long and spicy, the 2021 leaves the sense drenched in primary concentration, tapering off long and tart with a framework of edgy tannins.”

94 pts. James Suckling:

“It opens with a heady, minty aroma and dense blackcurrant flavors shaded by char, graphite and black figs wrapped in plenty of fine-grained tannins. Time will be the friend of this muscular wine.”

Acclaimed Napa Valley vintner Randy Dunn has a reputation for producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. He collaborated with Long Shadows’ winemaker Gilles Nicault to produce Feather, the only wine he has ever made outside of California. - Wine Factor

FROM THE WINERY
Vineyards:

The 2021 Feather relies on three distinct Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon growing regions to create a complex, layered wine. Weinbau Vineyard (Wahluke Slope) gives Feather its texture and backbone. Dionysus Vineyard (White Bluffs) brings intense, dark fruit, and a collection of top Horse Heaven Hills vineyards give the wine a silky, elegant texture and its appealing earthiness.

Vintage:

The 2021 vintage will be remembered for low yields and extreme temperatures stretching from late June to the beginning of July. The early summer heat wave was followed by ideal weather, with warm days and cool nights extending well into October. The combination of low yields and extra hang time allowed the grapes to reach full physiological maturity, resulting in a vintage marked by balanced wines with great concentration and flavor.

Winemaking:

Hand-harvested grapes picked at the peak of ripeness were sorted, lightly crushed, and fermented in small stainless-steel tanks. Once fermentation was underway, the cellar crew vigorously pumped over the cap 2-3 times a day to extract color and structure; then, as fermentation neared completion, pump-overs were handled more gently to capture delicate tannins and texture without imparting harsh tannins. When ready for barrel, the wine was aged 22 months in French oak, 85% new.

Tasting Notes:

Dense and deeply colored in the glass, this bold, robust Cabernet offers enticing aromas and a lavish core of black fruits complemented by dried rosemary, ripe plum, earthy notes and oak spice. Lush and beautifully balanced on the mid-palate, structured tannins combine to provide a harmonious impression that stretches across a long, graceful finish.
