Roar Wines Rosella's Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021
Santa Lucia Highlands, CA
95 pts. Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2021 Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard brings a more concentrated, serious feel and offers ripe mulberry and cherry fruit as well as scorched earth, graphite, and minerality, with nicely integrated oak. It's medium-bodied, concentrated, and focused, with a beautiful mouthfeel. It needs 2-3 years in the cellar (you'd be forgiven for enjoying a bottle today) and will evolve nicely over the following decade."
93 pts. Wine Enthusiast:
"Hibiscus, crisp red fruit, fennel pollen and lemon peel aromas make for a fresh and lively nose on this single-vineyard expression. The palate lands in broad fashion, with lush flavors of strawberry, more citrus and a pinch of pepper dust."
92 pts. Vinous:
"The 2021 Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard is bright and effusive. Crushed red berry fruit, flowers, dried herbs and a kiss of sweet French oak are nicely lifted. This racy, exuberant Pinot is quite the charmer. It, too, will benefit from a bit of cellaring."
No one knows the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA better than Roar's founder Gary Franscioni. In 1996 he planted Rosella's Vineyard, named after his wife. The following year he and Gary Pisoni planted Garys' Vineyard. Both vineyards' Pinot Noir grapes are of the best quality and are highly sought-after by many wineries. Of course, since he owns the vineyards, he gets first choice of the grapes that he’ll use for his Pinots. The best grapes combined with a talented winemaker result in consistently delicious Roar Pinot Noirs! - Wine Factor
FROM THE WINERY
Tasting Notes
Deliciously floral, with raspberries and rose petals. There is a touch of bold elegance in its supple texture. Like Versailles - serious, but pretty.
The Vineyard
Rosella’s Vineyard is the first property we planted to vine, and is the northernmost of our vineyards. Planted in 1996, it wraps around the family home and is named for Rosella, Gary’s wife. Its rows of vines ascend from River Road up the hillside toward the mountain ridge, often laced with fog. Plush lemon trees flank its western edge. The sandy loam soil allows good drainage, encouraging deep vine roots that add complexity in the wines. Here we grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah. Our wines from Rosella’s Vineyard are known for their expressive aromatics and smooth suppleness on the palate.
Tasting Notes: Tea roses fill the nose before cherries and boysenberries emerge on the mouth, typical of Rosella’s fruit profile due to its more Northern location. It brings density with a lively, velvety mouthfeel while rose, cherry candy and a bit of leather show through on the finish.
