Raen Fort Ross - Seaview Sea Field Pinot Noir 2022

West Sonoma Coast AVA, CA
750 ml

99 pts. James Suckling:

"This has great tension between the bold, dramatic fruit and mineral flavors and the chalky, firm and brightly crisp texture. Laced with layers of red and black cherries and vivid raspberries, with strawberries in the finish. All backed by nervy acidity and moderate tannins for a sense of tension and linearity."

95 pts. Wine Spectator:

"This is tightly coiled, with bitter cherry and damson plum fruit that is pure and unadorned, while savory, flint and sanguine flecks dart through. The long finish shows a tensile structure that lends a sense of precision and mouthwatering cut. Have patience with cellaring. Best from 2026 through 2036. 525 cases made."

An impressively well-balanced, gorgeous Pinot that will blow your socks off! And as an added bonus, it’s just 13% alcohol. A winner! – Wine Factor

FROM THE WINERY

The 2023 vintage on the west Sonoma Coast is one of the best we have experienced since founding RAEN. The growing season began with heavy winter rainfall, cleansing the thirsty forests, rivers, and meadows, nourishing our vines and all the microflora, fauna, and nature surrounding them. A cool, breezy spring gave way to a beautiful, mild summer. As harvest approached, coastal fog engulfed the grapes, sunlight shone softly above, and with each day, slowly and evenly, the grapes approached ripeness. As we began harvest without rush, the beautiful aromatics from each of our sites slowly began to fill the cellar air. The cool 2023 growing season on the Coast has imparted its mark of near perfection for what we love in wine - lifted aromatics, elegance, and depth that reflect the incredibly biodiverse sites where our vines are rooted. Enjoyable now, this vintage is one we can’t wait to tuck away in the cellar and watch evolve for many more decades to come.

From a rugged and remote pocket of Fort Ross- Seaview, this 4.8-acre monopole vineyard represents our most elegant terroir. The vines are rooted deeply in an ancient seabed that dates back more than 200 million years ago and soar high above the sea at over 1,000 feet in elevation. Mere miles from the ocean, this is our highest elevation and most coastal pinot noir bottling. Rose petals, raspberry, purple flowers, and wild strawberry all fill the bowl, followed by notes of freshly picked wild raspberries, sea moss, and white tea. On the palate, ripe red berries persist, followed by blood orange pith, chamomile flower, and wet rock with a kiss of salinity, transporting us to the Sea that sits just beyond our Sea Field site. Violet floral notes and hints of crushed wild berries follow, elegantly leading into an incredibly long and vibrant finish.
