When we came upon this wine at a recent tasting event, we turned and looked at each other with wide eyes after the first sip. "WOW!" we both said. What a delicious wine! Sancerre is producing some amazing Pinot Noirs these days, and this one tops the charts! With a lovely nose that draws you in, warm earth, ripe red and black fruit flavors, and a lively minerally finish - it's got everything it takes to be a great Pinot. And with the added bonus of only 13% alcohol, we love this wine! - Wine Factor
FROM THE WINERY
André Vatan took over the helm of his family’s vineyard when his father unexpectedly passed away in 1988. The winery has a collection of about 9 small buildings that have the appearance of a rural hamlet, this the neighbors lovingly refer to as “Vatanville”. It’s very neat & tidy, in keeping with André’s character as he is almost obsessive about his attention to detail. From the clean well organized cellars, to the stakes of his neatly aligned vineyards, everything is perfect. There are four vineyards, all located around the winery with carefully controlled yields, as André would have nothing else! Along with his wife Ariel, they have created a highly rated & respected winery, with wines that are in demand.
Displaying elegant structure and depth, this Sancerre Rouge reveals layers of dark cherry and plum with supple tannins that dissolve seamlessly across the palate. Subtle vanilla undertones add complexity to the wine's refined character, while a lingering, warming finish showcases its impressive balance and aging potential.
Appellation: Sancerre
Grape varietals: Pinot Noir
Soil: Terres Blanches, which is limestone found in small particles that makes up 20% of the soil and is the best for Pinot Noir. Maulin Bêle vineyard surrounds the hamlet of Chaudoux.
Vinification: Traditional, manual harvesting, no oak aging, full malo-lactic fermentation.
Alcohol: 13%
Tasting notes: Red Sancerre is made in much smaller quantities than white in the appellation, but it is a local passion! With Pinot Noir coming from 30 year old vines, this wine is medium bodied & has really nice complexity. A delightful raspberry bouquet is supported by a vibrant, fruity palate with juicy red berry flavors. Lovely with roasted fish, pork loin or lightly spiced dishes.
