Figgins Family Wine Estates Figlia Walla Walla Valley 2021

Walla Walla, WA
750 ml
96 pts. James Suckling:

"A blend of opposites among Bordeaux grape varieties, this melange of merlot and petit verdot gives the plummy generosity of the former and the firm texture and dark chocolate of the latter. It’s well-structured in tannins, deep in fruit flavors and able to age well for several years. Drink now or hold."

94 pts. Wine Spectator:

"Boldly structured but richly polished, with expressive flavors of blackberry and cherry that are layered with lavender and woodsy spices as this builds tension toward fine-grained tannins. Petit Verdot and Merlot. Drink now through 2033. 1,487 cases made."

93 pts. Wine Advocate:

"A blend of Merlot and Petit Verdot blend and clocking in at 14.3% alcohol, the 2021 Figlia presents a dark, juicy and firm character, featuring layers of dark red and purple resinous flowers. The bold and ripe nose is complemented by plenty of supporting oak essences. The medium to full-bodied palate is expressive, balanced and fresh, showcasing fine-grained tannins that gracefully melt away over the long, juicy and succulent finish. This stands out as the best bottling of Figlia to date, and given its quality and price point, stocking up on this wine is highly recommended."

93 pts. Vinous:

"The 2021 Figlia, a blend of Merlot and Petit Verdot, is captivating. The 2021 is dusty and floral yet also vividly fruit-focused, with cascading sweet herbal tones complementing its core of wild berry fruits. This is pure elegance. Cooling acidity and masses of ripe cherry and blueberry fruit are in perfect balance. Only gently tannic yet with a classic feel, the 2021 finishes with dramatic length and a cheek-puckering tart berry tinge. It's amazing to think this is a second wine from the Figgins estate."

FROM THE WINERY
Winemaker’s Notes:

This delightful blend of Merlot and Petit Verdot is a real beauty. The nose delivers a pleasant potpourri of espresso, red currant, raspberry cobbler, graphite, violets, and fresh fir boughs. The wine shows off a strong structure complemented by a rich, velvety midpalate. The compelling concentration of black and blue fruits carries through to a fresh and lingering finish. Drinking amazingly now but can easily cellar for a decade if you can keep your hands off of it.

Vintage Notes:

2021 turned out to be one of the warmest vintages we have ever had. The season started off about normal with budbreak around the third week of April. The weather warmed up and we saw bloom dates that were a little bit early beginning the first week of June. During bloom of the 2020 vintage, we had cool temperatures with cloud cover and rain resulting in shatter and poor yields. The prior year’s lackluster bloom resulted in fewer clusters being formed in the buds for the 2021 vintage. The weather really warmed up, hitting many days of 100+ degrees, including a couple of days of 110+. The vines weathered the heat quite well and berries were very small, also leading to a light crop, yielding an average 1.5 – 2.0 tons per acre. Harvest began on September 8th and finished on October 12th, one of the earliest harvest endings for Figgins Estate Vineyard. What the vintage lacked in yield, it made up for in quality, producing wines of exceptional density.
